South Asia

About the Region

South Asia has one of the highest concentrations of Muslim people groups in the world.

The densely populated cities found in this region are full of strategic opportunity for long-term workers. These cities offer ease of access for new workers to learn language and culture before launching into more difficult areas. Furthermore, many Muslims belonging to unengaged people groups whose homelands remain inaccessible to Gospel workers have migrated to South Asia’s cities.

Quick facts
  • Population: 1.4 billion people
  • Approximately 23% Muslim
  • Estimated 39 unengaged Muslim people groups of 10,000 or more
  • India holds the second largest population of Muslims in the world
  • Economically one of the poorest regions in the world

Regional needs

A new day dawns in this complex region as nations wake up to advances in technology and global commerce. Meanwhile, the rising generation navigates the tension between innovation and ancient tradition.

Frontiers’ Gateway Cities initiative in South Asia offers intensive language courses, coaching for healthy field life, and community-based apprenticeships.

The strategic opportunity to impact dozens of unengaged Muslim people groups in South Asia through business, community development, and Gospel witness is great.

How to pray

  • Pray for more field workers with the God-given grace to live simply in South Asia’s challenging conditions.
  • Ask the Lord of the harvest to raise up new teams to go to 14 identified strategic cities.
  • Pray that national believers would courageously serve Muslims in their own country.
  • Ask God to call new Muslim-background believers to go into states and districts where many unengaged Muslim people groups reside.
