Raising Up Missionaries

Practical Resources and Tools

To send missionaries, churches first need to raise missionaries. Here are several opportunities for helping the men, women, children, and families in your congregation to learn about missions and consider how God is calling them to bless the nations.

Serve International Students

Connect with international students at a nearby campus. Contact your local college’s international students office to learn about volunteer opportunities. You can also find nearby ministries and connect with students through International Friendships, Inc. and International Students, Inc., two Christian organizations that introduce international students to followers of Jesus.

Consider “adopting” a student and welcoming them into your home on a regular basis. You can invite them to your holiday celebrations, bring them to church, and ask them to study the Bible with you. You can also house international students in your home for the school year.

Trips and Experiences

Interactive

Interactive Experiences

Create interactive experiences for people of all ages to engage in learning and outreach opportunities. For example, arrange a field trip to a local mosque or temple. Reach out to leaders at the place of worship and ask if they’d be willing to give your group a tour or have a Q-and-A session. Afterwards, debrief the experience as a group. This is also an excellent way to build relationships with leaders of other religious communities.

Short-Term, Prayer, and Vision Trips

Short-term and prayer trips are strategic opportunities to introduce your church members to God’s global work. One church has a goal of sending every person in their congregation on a short-term trip at least once.

Vision trips help participants gain strategic perspective for a particular people group or place. The primary goal on a vision trip is to help people get their feet wet and catch a vision for how God wants to use them and their church to bring the Gospel to those who have yet to hear it.

Ask your prospective missionaries to lead a short-term trip as a facet of their leadership development and ministry preparation.
